Comics course and exhibition

From the Roman sanitation system to today's smartphone, technology has had a hand in humans' evolving worldly experiences for time immemorial.

Ten emerging comic and graphic artists respond to the question "How has technology influenced human experience?" through the medium of sequential art. In preparation, the selected artists participated in a two month comics course taught by Nathan Onias of Crispy Cola Studio.

Selected works will be shown in an exhibition at City Library, from 23rd November to 8th January. The group will also be launching samples of their graphic novels at Indie Comic Con.

Selection Criteria

Anyone with their own comic can apply! We're always on the lookout for fresh content and new creators! Space is limited however so we may not be able to accommodate all applicants.

Here's the rundown on our selection process:

  • Priority will be given to first-time exhibitors who haven't previously held a table.

  • After that, return creators showing off new comics published in the last year get next dibs

  • Finally, the remaining spots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

  • Indie Comic Con is all about independent comics. Only applicants with a self-produced comic, zine, or graphic novel will be considered.

  • All materials sold must be of your own intellectual property. Fan art, back issues, and sketch comissions of IP you do not own or have a license for are a no-no.

  • If you have mature content (strong language, violence or sexual imagery), you are responsible for restricting its access to minors.

Please advise us if you require power. All electronic equipment must be tested and tagged prior to the event.

Keep in mind that we may offer you a smaller space than you applied for because we want to include as many creators as possible!

All applicants will receive confirmation of exhibition space no later than 1st October.

When and where is it?

Saturday 21st December, 11AM - 4PM
Northcote Town Hall
189 High Street, Northcote

I sell prints/novels/crafts, can I apply?

You need to have at least one comic book to be considered for a table. Of course you can sell other stuff too in addition to your comics.

Can I bring someone to keep me company at my table?

Yes. Full tables include two chairs so feel free to bring a buddy to help you out. If you book a half table, you won't have much room for a buddy unfortunately but volunteers will be on hand to watch your stuff in case you need a break from your table.

What's the venue like?

The Northcote Town Hall is a beautiful Victorian style building, of which the main hall accomodates 500 people and is accessible to passerby via side doors and a public square. Northcote is an inner city suburb located 4km from Melbourne city centre with easy acces via public transport.

Will I be doing my own cash handling?

Yes. You will be looking after your own sales so make sure you have an adequate float stuffed away in your bum bag and your card reader ready!

We're looking for some helping hands.

Become a volunteer and help us put on a great event!
Here's some of the things you might do:

  • Set up & decorate the venue.

  • Help exhibitors find their tables and assist them in getting set up

  • Provide information and assistance to the public

  • Facilitate and supervise activities

  • Manage the Indie Comic Con table

  • Stand in for exhibitors when they are away from their table

Additionally, if you have skills in video/audio recording, podcasting, photography, speech, journalism, or art instruction we'd love to hear from you.
Volunteer applications will open closer to the date!
